You Can’t Fit The House Flies’ “Sweet Foxhound” Into One Single Meaning

One of the most striking things about music is it will always leave space for you to find meaning in it. The House Flies lets you dwell on that space with their latest single “Sweet Foxhound”.

The House Flies is a US-based Midwest gothic post-punk band. They recently have expanded their band’s lineup and this is their first release after Mannequin Deposit from 2024. Originally written during their past sessions, the band kept its cinematic mood all while keeping a driving energy with Sweet Foxhound

The first part of the track almost feels deceiving. Every pulse of the bass, hypnotic delivery, and the percussion hits just feels really…dark. But right after the first verse, the  guitar unravels its layers slowly to add a subtle lift into its atmosphere. It’s still unsettling, yet it carries a familiar sense that’s quite hard to name.

The lyrics feel like wandering around a bustling town that changes into quiet corners once every person goes into a deep slumber—lights dimmed, closed doors, empty streets. But here’s the thing, the meaning? It’s not handed out to you

Literally, you might think it’s speaking to a foxhound with tenderness and mourning over it. Or you’ll try to dissect everything figuratively to relate it to your personal relationships. That’s exactly how this track clings and you’ll love The House Flies for it. Either way, if grief, melancholia, and all the unspoken emotions were beautifully bottled up into one track, it’s Sweet Foxhound. And if there’s one word to describe this song, it’s shadows — something you carry under your sleeves or trails behind your every step.
