“Dreamer,” the second single from HZPROD’s War Torn project track is a song that clearly wants to mean something; not just vibe, not just sound good in the background, but actually carry a message with some weight behind it. It doesn’t hide what it’s about. If anything, it walks in already mid-conversation, like you’re expected to catch up quickly.
The production sits in this interesting space between traditional boom-bap and something a bit more atmospheric. You’ve got the familiar drum backbone. It’s solid, grounded, the kind of rhythm that feels like it understands its job and shows up on time, but it doesn’t just sit there looping like it’s waiting for something more interesting to happen. Instead, it’s paired with these textures that feel just a little off-center in a deliberate way, like they’re constantly threatening to wander somewhere else but never quite do. They drift in and out around the edges of the mix, not enough to distract you, but enough to make you notice that there’s something else going on beneath the surface. Long story short: the beat knows its role: support the message without getting in the way of it.
The verses lean into global themes, including but not limited to conflict, inequality, exploitation and all of that pulling references from regions like parts of Africa and the Middle East. It’s heavy subject matter, and the track doesn’t really try to soften that. Instead, it presents it pretty plainly, which gives everything a sense of urgency. There’s a clear intention here: this isn’t just storytelling for its own sake, it’s trying to point outward, toward real-world issues that don’t neatly resolve in three minutes.
At the same time, the hook shifts things slightly. It brings in this more hopeful tone; focused on belief, freedom, resilience, which creates a contrast with the verses. And that contrast is doing a lot of the emotional work. Without it, the track might feel overwhelming. With it, there’s at least a sense that it’s building toward something, even if that “something” is more about awareness than resolution.
The fact that War Torn functions as an ongoing awareness project, with ties to organizations like Save the Children, makes the track feel less like a standalone release and more like part of a larger effort.
“Dreamer” isn’t trying to be subtle or ambiguous. It’s trying to be clear, direct, and purposeful and whether or not that fully lands for you probably depends on how much you value that kind of clarity in your music.
